2012 Peace Seminar in Korea

As a group, we were presented with the issue of “Comfort Women” and the “Falsification of 

History” in a visit to the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum. This issue often triggers a 

controversial response and creates conflict between Korea and Japan, but we endeavored to learn and understand how Korean people see the problem. There was a panel discussion in role play form was given by 3 participants. This was a very impressive and realistic representation of the comfort women issue.  

そして常に日本と韓国の間で議論となっている「慰安婦問題」や「歴史歪曲問題」など、私たち日本人にとって重要な課題にも向き合っていきました。。いつまでも二か国間で論争を続けると、決して平和へとは繋がりません。相互理解を高めるために、相手がこちらをどのように思ってどのような気持ちを抱いているのか、深く知ることの必要性を実感しました。

Every Wednesday at noon, at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, a demonstration is carried out where the gatherers demand an apology on behalf the “Comfort Women” from the Japanese government. The argument between Korea and Japan is not only a problem between the governments, but the public also needs to figure out a solution to this controversy. Through this peace seminar, we were given an opportunity to see the perspective of Korean people looking at the issue of “Comfort Women”, and eventually came to understand and realize what they were demanding from Japan. We never will be able to reach a peace unless we stop the continuing argument between our countries. 

在大韓民国日本大使館の前では毎週水曜日に「慰安婦問題」に対するデモ集会が実施されています。これらの外交問題は政府間だけの議論ではなく、今や私たち一般層のレベルでも考えるべき問題となっています。今回のセミナーを通し、韓国の人たちが日本に対し、「慰安婦問題」や「領土問題」をどのように捉えているのかを知ることができました特に「慰安婦問題」に関しては、女性同士であるからこそ犠牲者の気持ちを少しでも理解することができました。しかし女性への性暴力は第二次世界大戦時の過去のことだけではなく、現代も紛争が続くアフリカや、人身売買が繰り広げられる東南アジアの国々、そして韓国や日本にても実際生じている国際問題であります。女性の人権と尊厳が守られるために、私たち女性ができるアクションとは何かについて考えさせられる場となりました。
